Commission To Rewrite History Of Censuses In Nigeria

National Population Commission (NPC) says the Commission is committed to rewriting the history of censuses in Nigeria and delivering accurate, reliable, and acceptable National Population and Housing Census in 2023.

The Chairman of the Commission Mr. Nasir Kwarra gave the assurance at the 2023 Census Media Luncheon for Editors, Bureau Chiefs, and Population Correspondents in Abuja, the nation’s Capital.

Mr. Kwarra said that the success of the Media Luncheon can never be quantified and sought the support of the media to enable the commission to deliver a credible and acceptable census.

He further assured Nigerians that “the Commission is irrevocably committed to positively rewrite the history of censuses in Nigeria and deliver to this great nation accurate, reliable and acceptable census that will be purposefully relevant in the drive towards sustainable national development.”

The Chairman of the Commission added that “Preparations for the 2023 Population and Housing Census are on course and the Commission is confident that the prospect for an accurate and reliable census appears brighter than ever”.

He called on “all Nigerians to join the Commission in the bid to give the country reliable demographic data through the forthcoming 2023 census.”

This is because our population remains the greatest asset in national development and it must be harnessed in order to make life worth living for our people.

He stated that “the commission has, within the limits of available resources, striven to discharge its functions in line with its mandate”.

“Over the years, the Commission has invested considerable time and resources in planning for the 2023 Population and Housing Census by drawing from its rich institutional experience spanning two censuses and a pool of tested professionals to give the nation a truly digital and scientific census that will generate data for national planning within the context of our present realities’’.

The Luncheon further availed the Commission of the official launching of an in-house magazine.

The chairman of the Public Affairs Committee of the Commission, Dr. Eyitayo Oyetunji, commended the media for projecting the commission positively ahead of the 2023 Population and Housing census.

Also, the Director of Public Affairs Dr. Isiaka Yahaya while speaking on the objective of the Luncheon said “is to deepen and strengthen the relationship with the media and thanked the media for a good job so far, as well as ask for more support toward the census”
