Community Policing: Ex-DIG of Police calls for more collaboration for proper implementation

The Former Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Hashim Argungu, has stressed the need for the active involvement of stakeholders for the successful implementation of community Policing system.

The DIG made the assertion at the sensitization and awareness campaign organised by the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Sokoto State held at the Sultan Maccido Institute for Qur’an .and General Studies.

DIG Argungu asserted that the concept and implementation of community policing especially with the active involvement of local people remains the best and formidable way of ensuring security within communities.

Argungu who was the keynote speaker at the occasion presented a paper on security and significance of community policing, said the dialogue was commendable and timely.

According to him, security served as the foundation of all human activities and development.

“Security is not only fundamental to the sustenance of life and property, but also bedrock of all sustainable human development,” the Ex-DIG said

The former DIG also highlighted on involvement of community in the system, concept of good selection of community policing agents and the role of citizens as well as leaders in ensuring a successful Community Policing.

In his remarks, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10, AIG Muhammad Mustapha, solicited for the support of all stakeholders in ensuring the success of Community Policing in the state and country.

AIG Mustapha added that security issue is a collective responsibility, therefore communities at various level need to contribute a quota for sustainable security of lives and property of all citizens.

The AIG commended Inspector General of Police Muhammad Adamu for his continued support and cooperation to the force towards ensuring effective security services across the country.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, CP Ibrahim Kaoje, commended the Sokoto State government for its unwavering support to the police and other security agencies which he said had placed the state at a vintage position of being the most peaceful state in the country with minimal crime rate.

He added that implementation of community policing by Inspector General of Police IGP Muhammad Adamu, marked the beginning of community policing with stakeholders.

The CP expressed the hope that all the relevant stakeholders would play vital role in the implementation of community policing in the state.

Also in his remarks, the Chairman Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, Aminu Bodinga, who was represented by Ibrahim Binji, some of the measures and strategies were already put in place by the committee in collaboration with Police.

Binji added that Committees on Community Policing have been inauguarated by the government while sensitization from district down to ward level involving community leaders was on the pipeline.

He thanked and congratulated the Inspector General of Police, IGP Muhammad Adamu and security agencies for coming up with community policing.

Some of stakeholders who delivered goodwill messages were the Security Chiefs, former AIG of Police Tambari Yabo, Traditional institutions and among others in the State.
