The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Anambra State Chapter, has revealed plans to implement a whistleblower strategy aimed at preventing building collapses and eliminating unqualified developers in the state’s building industry.

Chairman of the Anambra State Committee on COREN, Engr. Victor Meju, made the announcement as part of the Council’s initiative to tackle the challenges posed by incompetent developers, who are the primary cause of frequent building collapses in Anambra.

Engr. Meju disclosed that COREN will introduce a new operating framework in Anambra, allowing the Southeast Regional Committee to collectively monitor and regulate engineering activities.

This approach will involve a team of professionals, including architects, engineers, experienced builders, and other experts, to prevent building failures.

The Chairman emphasized the importance of adopting the whistleblower policy to encourage the public to report fraudulent developers.

This proactive measure aims to combat the prevalence of quackery that leads to building collapses and other engineering disasters.

Engr. Meju affirmed the decline in professional standards that has resulted in the hiring of incompetent individuals by developers.

He stressed the necessity of conducting essential tests to verify the quality of materials used in construction projects, highlighting the need for collaboration with regulatory agencies in the state.

While acknowledging challenges such as limited manpower and resources for field inspections, the Chairman urged for increased awareness campaigns to promote safe and well-planned construction practices.

He also called on the Anambra State Government to take a proactive stance in addressing the issue and implementing recommendations to prevent further incidents.

Engr. Meju further warned of the risks posed by unqualified developers and stressed the urgency of taking action to protect the lives and properties of Anambra residents, particularly during the rainy season.
