Cote d’Ivoire Beats Guinea-Bissau In AFCON 2023 Opener

Cote d’Ivoire made an impressive start at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, securing a convincing 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau on the tournament’s opening night.

Goals from Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso saw them cruise to victory at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe, home to a 60,000 crowd situated in Abidjan.

The Ivorian squad put in a strong performance throughout the game, dominating possession of the ball by a whopping 61%.

The host nation’s Evan Ndicka received the first yellow card of the tournament in the 30th minute from the Egyptian referee Amin Omar. Moro Cassama was also booked a minute to end the first half due to a foul on Krasso. Singo, Diomande, Sangare, Krasso and Bamba were the five players substituted by the host nation.

On the other hand, Guinea Bissau substituted Cassama, Rodrigues, Balde and Mane.

Ivory Coast leads the Group A table in Match Day 1 with three points.

The tournament’s draw has placed the two teams in group A, alongside Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. Following today’s game, the host country will lock horns with Nigeria on January 18 and Equatorial Guinea on January 2022.
