Court Condemns Police Delay On Prosecution In Niger State

Niger State chief judge, in North Central Nigeria, Justice Halima Abdulmalik has condemned police prosecutors in the State for keeping suspects in correctional facilities without taking them to court for proper prosecution.

The CJ who visited correctional centers in the state, reviewed some cases, and also condemned in strong terms the deliberate refusal of police prosecutors to arraign suspects in court.

“You cannot just detain somebody without taking him to court for prosecution, at least they are human beings”. added The CJ

The chief judge further instructed the head of the prosecuting unit of the Niger State Police Command, Abdullahi Mayaki to make available the case files of all the suspects awaiting trial languishing in the correctional facilities to her office for necessary action.

Report shows that inmates awaiting trials for over 5 years at correctional centers in Niger State, were discovered during the Chief Judge’s visit across the correctional centers.
