Cross River: 10,000 Rural Homes To Get Solar Power

As part of efforts to advance socioeconomic growth through enhanced renewable energy, ten thousand rural households have been selected in Cross River State to receive solar power.

The Governor of Cross River State, Southern Nigeria, Bassey Otu disclosed this during a Media Parley in Calabar, the State capital.

Otu said that his administration has decided to embark on a massive solar energy revolution in the state for people in rural areas.

“Power is one of the thematic areas this administration has done a lot to address. This government is about the people. We have acquired solar power mini-grids, which will be deployed to 10,000 homes. These mini-grids will not be for cities, but for rural communities,” Otu stated.

Otu announced that Cross River was committed to the acquisition of the National Integrated Power Plant located at Odukpani local government area, stating “the acquisition of the NIPP in Ikot Nyong would transform the socioeconomic status of the people and state.”

According to him, the government would be launching its power station within two months, further hinting that a new framework on electricity supply would soon be passed into law and accented to.

He disclosed that the policy has been designed to establish a structured approach to power generation, distribution, and regulation and ensure Cross River maximizes its energy potential.

“To transform our energy sector, we have set up a policy to guide power generation in Cross River. The House of Assembly is finalizing the legal framework to ensure we have full control over our energy sector,” the Governor stated.

Otu assured that the government’s energy security architecture would boost the productivity of nano, micro and small businesses, and in turn shore up its internally generated revenue.
