Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has commended the electorate and officials for peaceful conduct of the 2024 local government election.
Governor Otu gave the commendation shortly after casting his vote alongside his wife, Eyoanwan, at Adiabo – Ukotikang polling unit in Government Primary School Adiabo Efut, Odukpani local government area.
Otu, who expressed optimism that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would coast to victory, agreed with the observations made by local and international observers on the generally peaceful ambience and seamless execution of the polls across the 18 council areas.
A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Nsa Gill indicated that the strategic presence of security forces across the state ensured the general safety of voters and electoral personnel.
According to the spokesperson, Governor Otu further stated, “we are confident that the residents of Cross River State would cast their votes in favor of the APC, recognizing us as the party that will fulfill our commitments.”
Continuing, the governor affirmed, “we have a well defined vision for the state and the party’s candidates in the councils understand that they must align with the state government’s agenda and exhibit unwavering dedication to realizing good governance.”
Meanwhile, the deputy governor, Dr. Peter Odey joined his constituents to cast his vote at his polling unit in Idum-Mbube, Ogoja.
According to the Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Mr. Fred Abua, Dr. Odey also expressed confidence in the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Chris Agbeh, as well as other APC chairmanship and councillorship candidates across the state.
“Cross Riverians will vote massively for APC candidates across the state because only the APC has been campaigning”, the Deputy Governor remarked.
Speaking further, he opined that the credibility of the party’s candidates and the trust in the leadership of Governor Bassey Otu would make victory easy.
While the APC fielded candidates in all the 196 wards and 18 local government areas, the other nine political parties the fielded candidates for selected wards and local government chairmanship positions.
The Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission is expected to announce the results of the election within 48 hours.
Recall that the last local government area election in the state were held in 2020 under the former governor, Mr Ben Ayade.
