The Cross River State governor, Bassey Otu, has begun upgrading infrastructure ahead of the 2026 edition of the African Sub-Sovereign Government Network (AfSNET), having secured the hosting right.

Governor Otu gave insight into the development when he spoke with journalists at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, southern Nigeria, on arrival from AfSNET 2025 held in Algeria.

The AfSNET Conference is Africa’s leading investment and policy platform for sub-sovereign governments, which draws leaders, investors, and policy experts to foster partnerships, attract investments, and share governance best practices.

Otu told journalists that Cross River State won the hosting right due to its reputation for integrity, stability, and good governance, noting “this development has firmly placed the state on the global map.”

The Governor further said, “This is nothing short of divine intervention. Like other sub-nationals, we put in a bid, but the respect Cross River has earned at home and abroad made the difference. It shows the world believes in us and our capacity to deliver.”

Continuing, Otu said, “We have begun upgrading infrastructure and hospitality facilities across all three senatorial districts to meet international standards. Preparations will extend beyond Calabar to tourist destinations such as Obudu and Ikom to ensure every part of the state benefits.”

According to the governor, the 2026 summit is expected to attract between 40 and 70 sub-sovereign leaders from across Africa, alongside investors and business delegations, resulting in significant economic benefits for the state.

Otu gave the assurance that, “in terms of economic impact, it will be massive. We will be having between 40 and 70 sub-sovereign leaders here in Calabar. They are coming with their business people, and they are coming with all their retinue of government officials. That I can tell you. After they have come and gone, this state will never be the same again.”

He said that the conference would open doors for trade partnerships, investment inflows, and job creation, insisting, “This is about showcasing the entire state. When it comes to preparation, Cross River never takes second place. We will be ready.”

Linking the international recognition to his ‘People First’ agenda, Otu noted that ongoing reforms in food security, energy, healthcare, and youth empowerment through digital skills are already repositioning the state as a hub for sustainable investment.

He appealed to citizens, businesses, and development partners to rally behind the state for a successful hosting.
