Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Bundesverfassungsschutz, has issued a warning about a cyber group linked to Russia’s military intelligence, GRU Unit 29155, which has been involved in cyberattacks against NATO and EU nations.

In a post on the social media platform X on Monday, the Bundesverfassungsschutz, along with the FBI, U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA, the NSA, and other international partners, raised the alert about the group known as UNC2589.

This warning comes amid increased concerns in Europe over Russian hackers and spies following Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier this year, Berlin accused Russia of orchestrating several cyberattacks targeting Germany’s governing Social Democrats, as well as companies in the logistics, defence, aerospace, and IT sectors.

The intelligence agency noted that the group, also known as Cadet Blizzard or Ember Bear, engages in espionage and sabotage, often defacing websites and leaking stolen data.

GRU Unit 29155 has also been linked to the 2018 poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Britain.
