Data Protection: Commission Boss Harps On Employment Opportunities

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC Dr. Vincent Olatunji has re-emphasized the need for Nigerians to leverage on the potentials that are bound in Data Protection Ecosystem.
Olatunji stated this when delivered a keynote at the Workshop on “Data Protection Regulations and Compliance” organised by Central Soft Support Services Limited in conjunction with Satlink Limited for Strategic Government Agencies.
He highlighted the global significance of data protection, citing instances where data subjects’ information had been mishandled.
Olatunji urged the participants to leverage on the prospects and employment opportunities as well as potentials within the Data Protection Ecosystem.
He highlighted various aspects of data protection, including the responsibilities of data controllers and processors, the rights of data subjects, and the establishment and objectives of the NDPC in Nigeria.
On behalf of the organizers, Dr. Olatunji also presented certificates of attendance to all workshop participants.
Collaboration
In another development,the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and
Association of Telephone, Cable TV and Internet Subscribers (ATCIS) have agreed to collaborate in enhancing awareness on data subjects’ rights and enhance the fulfillment of data controllers’ obligations especially in the telecommunications sector.
The agreement was at the instance of the National Commissioner, NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji who received in audience, the Executive Committee of the Association of Telephone, Cable TV and Internet Subscribers (ATCIS), led by the President , Prince Sina Bilesanmi.
During the visit, Prince Bilensanmi extended his congratulations to the National Commissioner for the transition of the commission from a Bureau, and he also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for enacting the Data Protection Act.
He emphasized the crucial role of their association in advocating for subscribers’ rights and raising awareness to deepen the understanding of Data Protection.
The NDPC Boss expressed gratitude for the visit and commended the association for their advocacy on behalf of over 200 million subscribers who are data subjects.
He elaborated on how the Data Protection Act would safeguard citizens’ rights, help combat crimes and generate jobs.
Similarly Dr. Olatunji received in audience, the Director General of National Early Warning Center, NEWC, Mr Chris Ngwodo and some executive members of the center.
Mr Chris Ngwodo noted that data protection is a crucial area of early warning hence, the NDPC is a natural partner in the pursuit of the goal of NEWC. He also congratulated the commission on its transition from a Bureau.
The National Commissioner expressed his understanding that the mandates of NDPC and National Early Warning Center are closely related as there can’t be a conversation about security, development and digitalisation without the issue of proper identity.
He stated that NDPC has a huge mandate, thereby necessitating robust partnerships with other stakeholders.
The two organisations agreed to enter a strategic partnership to drive their respective mandates.
