Data Protection Commission Promotes Privacy Awareness Among Teens

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has joined the strategic partners of ngTeenCyberfest2023 to promote privacy awareness among Nigerian teens.

The ngTeenCyberFest 2023 which is the largest privacy and cybersecurity festival tailored specifically for teenagers is organised by C-C Pro [Child Cyber Protection], an organisation promoting healthy interaction of young people and technology.

National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji said the Commission would leverage on the ngTeenCyberfest2023 to empower Nigerian teens with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely.

“We are excited to partner with ngTeenCyberfest2023 to raise awareness about the importance of online safety and data protection among Nigerian teenagers. 

“With the rising prevalence of cyber threats, it is crucial that we equip our youth with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely. By working together, we aim to create a more resilient and secure digital environment for Nigerian youngsters,” he said

According to the  NDPC, the partnership was vital as society increasingly relies on technology and digital platforms for various aspects of life.

“For this reason, it is crucial to educate and empower the younger generation to protect themselves against potential online threats such as identity theft, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and data breaches,” Olatunji stated.

NDPC will bring its expertise in data protection and privacy regulations to the forefront, providing guidance and insights to ngTeenCyberfest2023 organizers and attendees.

The Commission would offer information designed to equip teenagers with the necessary knowledge to protect their online privacy, identify potential risks, and respond effectively to any cybersecurity challenges they may encounter.

According to the Co-Founder of ngTeenCyberfest2023, Delmwa Gogwim joining forces, NDPC and ngTeenCyberfest2023 are committed to addressing these concerns head-on and fostering a safer online environment for Nigerian teenagers.

She noted that all partners aspired to collectively promote a culture of online consciousness throughout Nigeria.

“We are delighted to collaborate with NDPC, as this partnership reinforces our commitment to empowering Nigerian teenagers with the necessary skills to protect themselves online.

“By organizing interactive events and campaigns, we aim to create a paradigm shift where Nigerian youth not only understand the importance of cybersecurity but actively practice safe online habits. We look forward to working closely with NDPC to achieve this vision

“The partnership between NDPC and ngTeenCyberfest2023 signifies a significant step towards safeguarding young Nigerians in an increasingly digital world,” Ms  Gogwim explained

She said the collaboration was set to make a substantial impact on cybersecurity awareness and online safety among teenagers across Nigeria.

The 2023 edition would host hundreds of students from secondary and higher education centres of learning to interact with subject-matter experts and stakeholders helping to improve the management of young Nigerians in cyberspace.

This year’s edition of Nigeria Teen Cyber Festival: ngTeenCyberFest 2023 is held September 28 inside Baze University, Abuja with the main theme of ‘Promoting Young People & the Power of Innovation in a Digital Economy’.

It would feature hybrid events of real life, onsite conferences and expos as well as virtual interaction simultaneously.

The ngTeenCyberfest2023 “is building on the success of the last edition hosted in Jos, Plateau state with the support of public and private organisations that included Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd (NIGCOMSAT), National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Plateau State Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA), UNESCO, and the Africa Digital Economy Forum (ADEF).
