The National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Vincent Olatunji has recommended that the Navy formulates a privacy policy and appoint an in-house Data Protection Officer (DPO).
He said that the Nigerian Navy plays a vital role as a major Data Controller and individual Data Subjects while noting that non-compliance could expose the Navy to risks such as reputational damage and lack of trust and confidence.
The National Commissioner made the recommendation when he led the management of the commission on a courtesy visit to the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, represented by the Chief of Communications and Information Technology, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, at the Nigeria Naval Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The National Commissioner expressed the Commission’s readiness to conduct capacity-building on Data Protection and Privacy.
During the meeting, the NDPC boss provided a brief overview of the Commission and the significance of Data Protection and Privacy in Nigeria and globally.
In response, Rear Admiral Bankole commended the National Commissioner for his passionate leadership. Acknowledging the critical importance of protecting personal data, he likened data to the new oil and affirmed the necessity for all security agencies to support the Commission’s cause.
He expressed the Navy’s full commitment to the Commission and its readiness for the proposed capacity-building.
Bankole underscored that the success of the Commission would be a collective win for all, emphasizing the Navy’s alignment with the NDPC’s goals in ensuring data privacy and security.
