Cyber security specialist Oluwafemi Osho has urged all relevant parties to ensure comprehensive dissemination of data privacy education across all segments of society.

Osho gave the advice on Thursday during an interview, emphasizing the importance of educating every individual within society about the necessity of data privacy, particularly in light of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).

Data privacy involves safeguarding personal information from unauthorized access and empowering individuals to control who can access their personal information.

It also involves ensuring the appropriate management, access, retention, integrity, and security of sensitive data, encompassing various aspects of data protection.

The cyber security specialist advocated for government engagement with community leaders and influencers to boost the relatability and credibility of the awareness message.

“Despite these efforts to raise awareness about data privacy, there seems to be a gap in reaching citizens with minimal or no Information Technology (IT) knowledge.

“While IT and cyber security professionals show a significant level of awareness and understanding, the general populace, especially those not versed in digital literacy remain largely uninformed.

“This discrepancy highlights the necessity for targeted educational campaigns and initiatives specifically designed to bridge the knowledge gap.

“Ensuring that data privacy education is accessible and understandable to all, regardless of their IT background.

“Tailoring communication strategies to cater to a broader audience can help in making data privacy knowledge more widespread among the general public, fostering a more privacy-conscious society,” he said.

Osho suggested that the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) could expand the reach of its national awareness campaigns by involving additional pertinent stakeholders.

He added that the campaigns could involve television, radio, social media, and other platforms for a wider audience.

“The government can incorporate data privacy education into the national curriculum at various levels of education and ensure that citizens understand the importance of data privacy from a young age.

“Workshops, seminars, and webinars can also be organised for adults to cover topics like safe internet practices and understanding one’s data rights.

“Collaboration between the government and private sector can enhance the reach and effectiveness of data privacy education,’’ Osho said.

According to him, companies, especially those in technology and telecommunications, can play a crucial role in educating their customers about data privacy through regular communications.

He said that the communication platforms could include emails, messages on data usage policies, and tips for protecting personal information.

The cybersecurity expert encouraged the government to involve community leaders and influencers in disseminating awareness to enhance the message’s relatability and credibility.

“Local events and community-driven initiatives can address specific privacy concerns relevant to different groups within Nigeria,’’ he said.
