Nigeria’s anti-graft Agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says it has suspended two of its officers involved in the scuffle that resulted in the death of an inspector, Mr Abel Dickson.
Spokesperson of the Commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren made this known while briefing journalists on the incident that led to the death of the young officer at Sokoto Zonal Command in Northwest Nigeria.
Uwujaren said that “the two staff would face further disciplinary measures in line with the Commission’s staff regulation.”
He said the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa who is saddened by the incident, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family in Jos, Plateau State.
He assured them that the Commission would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those implicated in the death of Dickson were brought to justice.
The young officer died on May 7, 2023, at the Usmanu DanFodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto where he was receiving treatment for injuries he sustained, from a scuffle with two other staff Apata Odunayo and Mr. Ogbuji Tochukwu.
While giving reasons for the scuffle, Mr Uwujaren explained that the three staff “had disagreed over procedures for the custody of items belonging to a suspect in detention, leading to a fight, a conduct which the Commission frowns at.”
“The latest information is that a two-count holding charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide has been filed against them at a Chief Magistrate Court, Gwiwa in Sokoto the state capital. Both offences are punishable under Sections 60 and 191 of the Sokoto State Penal Code Law, 2019,” Uwujaren said.
He warned staff to guard their conduct at all times by established codes of behaviour of the commission.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission also warned that any act of indiscipline would not be tolerated.
