The death toll from landslides triggered by heavy rains in southern Ethiopia has risen to 125, according to the regional government.
Authorities said intense rainfall last week caused a series of landslides across parts of the Gamo Zone.
As of Thursday, officials had confirmed 70 deaths. But on Sunday, the South Ethiopia Regional Government reported that the number of fatalities had climbed to 125 as search and recovery efforts continued.
More than 11,000 people have also been displaced by the disaster, the regional government’s communications office said in a statement.
Abiy Ahmed, the country’s Prime minister visited the affected communities to express condolences to residents and pledged government support for those impacted.
