Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has assessed the operational readiness of troops in Adamawa State, North East Nigeria, while identifying challenges and areas requiring enhanced support.

During a visit to the operational base unit in the state, General Musa also paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.

Speaking at the Adamawa State Government House, the Defence Chief commended the Federal Government for its sustained support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), noting that such commitment continues to yield improved operational outcomes.

“We appreciate the Federal Government for standing firmly behind the Armed Forces. This support has significantly enhanced our capacity to address emerging threats,” General Musa said.

He also expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for supporting military personnel and families of fallen soldiers.

General Musa reiterated the Armed Forces’ two-pronged strategy in tackling insecurity through both kinetic and non-kinetic measures. He stressed that while both methods are vital, non-kinetic approaches often lead to longer-lasting peace.

“Security is not just about weapons. When people feel the impact of governance, they protect and support the system. That is why development is key to achieving lasting peace,” he stated.

He identified poverty and illiteracy as root causes of insecurity, adding that these factors make individuals more vulnerable to recruitment by insurgent groups. The CDS also praised the people of Adamawa for maintaining relative peace despite security concerns in other regions.

General Musa informed Governor Fintiri that the Defence Headquarters has approved the creation of Sector 4 of Operation Hadin Kai, with headquarters to be established in Mubi, Northern Adamawa.

In response, Governor Fintiri reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing tactical, strategic, and logistical support to the Armed Forces.

“We are aware of increasing terrorist activity in parts of the state and recognise the need for a strengthened military presence,” Governor Fintiri said. “We thank the CDS for approving Sector 4 in Adamawa. It’s a critical development.”

The Governor further disclosed that he has directed the rehabilitation of all roads within Gibson Jalo Barracks and announced the recruitment of local hunters to assist the military in combating insecurity.

Addressing troops at the operational base, General Musa announced plans to construct additional barracks and expand military deployments in response to evolving threats in the region.

He thanked the troops for their sacrifice, resilience, and continued service, conveying the appreciation of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Your efforts are not unnoticed. President Tinubu deeply appreciates your commitment to securing our nation. Continue to identify and neutralise criminal elements,” he urged.

During the visit, the Commander of 23 Brigade, Brigadier General OA Agwu, briefed the CDS on operational activities. General Musa commended the brigade for improving peace and security in its area of responsibility and reiterated the decision to establish Sector 4 Operation Hadin Kai with headquarters in Mubi.

The Defence Chief also inspected facilities at the 153 Base Service Group of the Nigerian Air Force to evaluate its operational readiness.
