The Governor of Delta State, Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori has promised to support the Nigeria Police Force to enhance peace and security for the benefit of law abiding citizens and government as a whole.

Governor Oborevwori made the pledge when he received the Commissioner for Police, Mr. Abaniwonda Olufemi and his team at the Government House, Asaba, the capital of Delta State, southern Nigeria.

Oborevwori, who was in company of members of the Delta State executive council, urged the police commissioner to partner with the government to provide citizens adequate security at all times.

He stated, “We warmly welcome you to our dear Delta State. I am delighted that on assumption of duty, you promised to ensure that there is peace in Delta State. I, therefore, urge you to keep to your promise of ensuring that the people sleep with their two eyes closed not with fear of the unknown or attack.”

M.O.R.E. Agenda

The governor hinted that one cardinal policy of his development agenda for the state, which is christened M.O.R.E (Meaningful Development; Opportunities for All; Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security), hinges on peace and security.

“In line with my M.O.R.E. agenda, which the ‘E’ represents, I will provide the necessary support to you and your team would need to sustain peace and enhance security in Delta State.

“As a government, our goal is to provide sustainable development and opportunities for the people. These can only be achieved successfully when there is peace and security,” he stressed.

Governor Oborevwori used the opportunity to commend the former police commissioner, Mr. Wale Abass for his diligent and passionate service to the people of Delta State.

He noted that the synergy between the government and the police has built trust and confidence of the people in the ability of the Nigeria Police force to serve.

The Governor further said, “I assure you of our determination to support you and let you know that this government would cooperate with the police and other security agencies for peace and development.

“Let me also use this opportunity to let you know that as a government, we have inaugurated the Police Trust Fund (PTF) to support policemen and their families, especially those on active duties. We will also encourage other stakeholders to donate to the Trust fund.”

He further pledged to donate some operational vehicles to the Delta State Police Command, adding“This is to demonstrate my administration’s will to strengthen our partnership with the police to curb crime and ensure absolute rural and urban safety.”

Commitment To Peace

Earlier, the Police Commissioner, Mr. Olufemi lauded the governor, the executive council and the people of Delta State for cooperating with the Nigeria Police in its fight against crime and perpetrators of criminalities.

Olufemi especially praised the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun for deploying him to Delta State with the mandate “to ensure that residents and citizens of Delta State enjoy peace and security as they engage in their lawful activities.

“Although we know that security is everybody’s business, we (police) will do everything we can to reduce crime to the barest minimum. Let me reiterate here that the Inspector General of Police insists on respect for the fundamental human rights of citizens and in this command, upholding the fundamental rights of our citizens is important as we discharge our duty,” Olufemi stressed.

This was contained in a press release signed by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bright Edafe.
