Democracy Day: President Tinubu Urges Nigerians To Uphold Democracy

President Bola Tinubu has charged Nigerians to rededicate themselves to strengthening democracy, which he describes as the best form of government.

The Nigerian leader gave the advice in a nationwide broadcast to citizens as the country commemorates 24 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

The President used the opportunity to eulogize acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election in Nigeria, the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, popularly known as M.K.O. Abiola

He said: “The democracy M.K.O Abiola died for, is one that promotes the welfare of the people over personal interest of the ruling class and won where the governed can find national fulfilment and happiness. That is the hope M.K.O Abiola ignited throughout our country in 1993.

“On this year’s democracy day, I enjoin all of us to rededicate ourselves to strengthening this form of government of free people that has been our guiding light these past 24 years. In particular, those of us who have been privileged to elect into public office at various levels in both the executive and legislative arms of government must recommit ourselves to offering selfless service to the people and delivering concrete democracy dividends in accordance with our electoral promises.”

The President recalled that June 12, 2023 marks 30 years since the annulment of the presidential election won by Abiola, lamented the circumstances under which the election was annulled by military fiat.

He described the June 12 1993 election as the fairest and freest election in Nigeria’s political evolution.
