Deputy Speaker Congratulates NUJ New President, Urges Professionalism

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has congratulated Comrade Alhasan Yahaya on his emergence as the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Comrade Yahaya was elected at the 8th Triennial Delegates Conference of the union held in Owerri, Imo State recently.

Mr. Kalu expressed his expectations from Yahaya’s leadership, stating that he looks forward to a strengthened partnership between the media and the legislature.

While emphasising the importance of the media in promoting democracy and good governance, the Deputy Speaker urged Yahaya to prioritize the welfare of Journalists.

Mr. Kalu who is a media-friendly legislator and former spokesman of the House in the 9th National Assembly also encouraged Yahaya to promote media professionalism and ethics, weed out quacks and unqualified practitioners and foster a culture of fact-based reporting and constructive criticism.

The Deputy Speaker further expressed his hope that Yahaya’s leadership would witness a significant improvement in the working conditions of Journalists, including better remuneration, training, and equipment.

He said he also looks forward to the NUJ’s continued role in promoting media literacy and combating misinformation.

The Deputy Speaker wishes Yahaya a successful tenure, assuring him of the legislature’s support in promoting the interests of Journalists and the media industry as a whole.
