The Cross River State Government has been commended for repositioning the state as Nigeria’s tourism capital and front line exporter of the country’s rich cultural heritage.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit on representatives the acting governor, Dr. Peter Odey in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, southern Nigeria.
Kalu noted that the extraordinary leadership and development strides of Governor Bassey Otu, who is on vacation, was reflected in what he described as ‘breathtaking landscape ‘.
The Deputy Speaker said, “Cross River is not just a state; it is a beacon of tourism, culture, and hospitality in Nigeria. From its breathtaking landscapes to its vibrant festivals, this state continues to showcase the beauty and heritage of our nation to the world.”
He also acknowledged the cordial relationship between the executive arm and legislature, emphasizing that a strong democracy was built on mutual respect amongst the three arms of government.

Speaking further on the significance of collaboration, the Deputy Speaker pledged continued support for the Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“When the executive is actively working to solve problems, it is more productive for the legislature to support their efforts rather than engage in opposition for opposition’s sake,” he said.
Kalu informed the acting governor that he was in Calabar for the 50th anniversary celebration of the University of Calabar and to present the 37th convocation lecture.
Kalu, who is an alumnus like the State Governor and Acting Governor, commended the University of Calabar for producing exceptional graduates, who have made meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s development.
He used the opportunity to urge stakeholders to restructure Nigeria’s education system to current global challenges and realities, noting “universities should promote research-driven policies that would ensure institutions train graduates equipped to drive national development.”
Legislative experience
Responding to the Deputy Speaker, the acting governor Dr. Peter Odey commended the 10th assembly for the “impressive legislative achievements particularly the ability to navigate complex national issues.”
Recalling their shared history as alumni of the University of Calabar, Odey appreciated Kalu for his sterling leadership qualities, which made him back then an outstanding student mediator.
Odey said, “back then, you demonstrated leadership. It is no surprise that you now occupy such a high office, contributing to national development at the highest level.”
According to Odey, Cross River was benefitting from the extensive legislative experience of Senator Otu in the areas of administration, security, healthcare, tourism, infrastructure and the economy.
He said, “Cross River remains a model of good governance. Our security is stronger and our tourism is thriving. The Calabar Carnival is as vibrant as ever, and I invite you all to come and experience it firsthand.
“Cross River remains a place of peace, growth and opportunity. We are proud of our contributions to Nigeria and will continue to move forward together,” he added.
