The Director General Voice of Nigeria Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace has visited the North West Zonal office in Kano in his effort to reposition the Voice of Nigeria brand.

During his engagement with staff of the Zonal office, the DG said his visit is part of his facilities tour since his appointment by the president. The DG took the opportunity to explain to the staff his desire to improve the quality of content and programmes of the corporation as well as enhance staff welfare.

The DG urged the staff of the zonal office to remain steadfast and committed to the mandate of the Voice of Nigeria as the External Broadcast Medium “telling Nigerian and African stories in our perspective”.

Ndace challenged the staff of the zonal office to take advantage of the position of Kano as the commercial hub of Nigeria and Africa. He added that there are too many important activities taking place in Kano to keep the staff busy with quality stories to portray the country in a good manner further to attract foreign direct investments.

He encouraged the staff to be proactive in generating authoritative content, expanding the reach of the corporation. “For you at the Zonal office, I want to urge you. Please don’t be laid back. Be proactive. You shouldn’t wait for headquarters to give you assignments.”

He said, “Kano is too important to be passive,” adding that contents from Kano should be generated in a different manner that you bombard the headquarters with a variety of stories at all times.

“You need to rethink your approach here about how you relate with the headquarters.”

The DG assured the North West Zonal staff of his commitment to staff welfare given the challenges hampering their operations. “I mean the entire value chain in the welfare, even your office environment and working conditions.” He identified training and retraining as critical and a priority in advancing staff’s professional know-how.

“You need to get the requisite training. You need to network and understand the global best practices on how this job is done because there are new technologies and opportunities every day.”

Malam Ndace said that with the media convergence, VON cannot afford to do things the way they were before,

“You will recall when many of you joined. What was very popular and in trend was largely the terrestrial platform, but today, what is trending is what is called convergence. VON cannot afford to be left behind.” Ndace said.

He Promised to expand local and international partnerships with other media outlets beyond BBC, VOA, and DW.  The DG was also taken around different sections of the Zonal office by the Bureau chief Malam Ladan Nasidi, where the DG acknowledged the challenges noticed and promised to come to their aid.
