The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) announced on Wednesday that it has fined Netflix €4.75 million (£4.11 million) for failing to adequately inform customers about its use of their personal data between 2018 and 2020.

The investigation, which commenced in 2019, revealed that Netflix’s privacy statement did not clearly explain how customer data was being utilised. Additionally, the DPA noted that Netflix did not provide sufficient information to customers who inquired about the data the company collected. These actions were deemed violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), according to the DPA.

Netflix, which has since updated its privacy statement and enhanced its data transparency measures, has contested the fine.

“Since this investigation began over five years ago, we have cooperated with the Dutch Data Protection Authority and proactively evolved our privacy information to provide even greater clarity to our members. We have objected to this decision,” a Netflix spokesperson stated in an email to Reuters.
