Dyche Regrets Iwobi Sale to Fulham Amid Everton’s Financial Struggles
Everton manager Sean Dyche has disclosed that he was hesitant to let Alex Iwobi join Fulham on transfer deadline day in 2023, but financial constraints left him with no other option.
Ahead of Everton’s Premier League match against West Ham United on Saturday, Dyche explained that every player at the club has a price.
“Alex Iwobi’s transfer came up just before the deadline. I didn’t want to lose him, but it was a deal we had to make,” Dyche shared in his pre-match conference. “I accepted it and focused on reshaping the squad. If the price is right, the player goes; if not, they stay.”
Dyche’s comments come as Everton faces an impending takeover by the Friedkin Group after eight years of ownership under Farhad Moshiri.
“I’m not yet aware of the new owners’ plans or financial strategies, so it will be a fresh decision for them,”
Dyche added.

Since his move to Fulham, Iwobi has excelled, tallying two goals and an assist in 10 Premier League games, including a goal in a recent 1-1 draw against Everton. The Nigerian midfielder has been vital in Fulham’s recent upturn in form, contributing to a thrilling 2-1 win over Brentford.
Following the Brentford victory, Iwobi remarked,
“It’s a big boost as we feel our recent performances have warranted more points.”
Last season, the 27-year-old notched five goals and two assists in 30 appearances for the Cottagers, winning the support of fans at Craven Cottage.
Iwobi’s impressive form has validated Dyche’s initial reluctance to part with him, as Iwobi was crucial in Everton’s fight for survival last season. However, Dyche’s remarks highlight the club’s financial constraints, which ultimately forced the transfer to Fulham.
