The Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, has called for love and new life among inmates.
He made the call when he visited Onitsha Correctional Centre to celebrate Easter with the inmates, delivering a powerful message on the transformative power of love.
In his homily titled “Following Jesus with Love,” Archbishop Okeke highlighted the importance of love in overcoming challenges and experiencing a new lease of life.
Drawing inspiration from the story of Mary Magdalene in the Bible, Archbishop Okeke emphasized the rewards of genuine love and the ability of love to conquer all problems.
He encouraged the inmates to embrace opportunities for reformation within the correctional centre, including the skill acquisition center, education, and other programs designed to help them become better individuals upon regaining freedom.
During the visit, Archbishop Okeke presented various items to the inmates, including cooked rice, meat, live cows, toiletries, and home provisions, symbolizing his commitment to supporting the wellbeing and transformation of those within the correctional system.
The Chaplain of the Correctional Centre Chaplaincy, Rev. Fr. Barth Okpalugo, praised Archbishop Okeke for his continuous support and dedication to serving God through humanitarian gestures.
Controller of Corrections in Anambra State, Valentine Nwosu, also commended Archbishop Okeke for his unwavering support and contributions to the inmates’ welfare.
Nwosu added that Archbishop Okeke’s Easter visit to the Onitsha Correctional Centre served as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding all present of the transformative power of love and the importance of supporting individuals in their journey towards reformation and redemption.
