The Governor of Ebonyi State South-east Nigeria, Engr David Umahi as a sign of respect to the soldiers who have laid their lives for the betterment of Nigeria has laid a wreath in the cenotaph of the unknown soldier as also part of activities to mark the grand finale of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The wreath laying ceremony took place at the Unity Square, Abakaliki the Ebonyi State Capital.
Others who took their turns to lay the wreath were the Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Mr Francis Nwifuru represented by the Leader of the House, Mr Victor Chukwu, the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Elvis Ngene, Commissioner of Police, Garba Aliyu, Cantonment Commander, Nkwagu Military Cantonment, Lt. Col Sunday Atomode, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Ebonyi State, Captain Fidelis Ogodo retired, the Chairman, Ebonyi State Traditional Rulers Council, Chief Charles Mkpuma, and a representative of the Legion Widows, Mrs Ada Onum.
The Governor who on arrival inspected a guard of honour mounted by a detachment of the Nigeria Army, also released a pigeon, as a symbol of Peace.
The detachment later sounded a twenty one gun salute in honour of the fallen heroes.
The Governor afterwards signed a condolence register as a mark of respect to the gallant heroes.
