The Ebonyi Government says it has procured 15 tractors to be distributed to farmers as part of the efforts to boost agribusiness in the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs Nkechinyere Iyioku, disclosed this on Tuesday, when members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state paid her a courtesy visit in her office in Abakaliki.

Iyioku said that the tractors were also intended to promote mechanized farming and reduce difficulties in land preparation for farming.

“The state has also procured 13,000 bags of fertilizer for the farmers for the 2024 farming season.

“You know 98 per cent of the people in Ebonyi are predominantly farmers and the present government is putting more efforts to ensure sustainable food production in the state.

“Fertilizer this time around is very expensive but I have to thank Gov. Francis Nwifuru for approving the distribution.

“On tractor, we have procured 15 of them for farmers, to be used to prepare their lands for cultivation,” she said.

The commissioner also said that the state-owned poultry farm, currently undergoing rehabilitation, had reached 90 per cent completion.

“By June, we will be putting livestock in the farm and we cannot be buying feed outside because the governor has also approved the construction of Ebonyi Feed Mill,” she said.

Speaking earlier, the chapel Chairman, Mr Uchenna Inya, commended the commissioner for her efforts aimed at agricultural development.

Inya said that his members were committed to support and promote agri-business in the state and country in general.
