Ebonyi State University Tackles Hunger Through Plant Breeding, Genetic

Ebonyi State University, EBSU Southeast Nigeria has held 21st inaugural lecture targeted at tackling hunger in Nigeria through plant breeding and Genetic.

The EBSU Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor Happiness Oselebe disclosed this during her 21st Inaugural lecture held at Information and Communication Technology Hall of the University.

The Professor of Plant Breeding and Genetic expressed worry over the global increase in Population which may reach 9.7 billion by 2050.

“According to United Nations forecast, the global population is on the increase, this will bring its several life threatening challenges, especially in the absence of adequate food production, supply and integrated programe to simultaneously address community needs for food and reproductive health and impact of climate variability and change”. Oselebe added.

Food and Nutrition Security

Oselebe informed that food Security exist when all people at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that can meet their dietery needs and food preferences for active healthy life.

She said hunger happens when people do not have enough to eat, especially having access to nutritional food.

Oselebe urge all stakeholder both in Agricultural and other sectors to come and join hands in the fight against hunger in Nigeria and world at large

” According to Food and Agriculture Organisation, a prime impact of food insecurity is malnourishment leading to malnutrition which refers to deficiencies or imbalance in persons’ intake of energy or nutrients”. She educated.

Moreso, the critical challenges of to food availability now and in future are population growth and climate change.

On his goodwill message, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Chigozie Ogbu said inaugural lecture is very important in the live of every professor as it helps you to upgrade your knowledge and to update yourself for the betterment of the society at large.

COMMENDATION

The Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Ike-Elechi Ogba commended professor Oselebe for making the University and her family proud.

Professor Ogba further thanked her for all her move to end hunger in Ebonyi State, Nigeria and world at large.
