The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), have reviewed the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners in Nigeria.

This review, supported by the Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC), took place during a technical committee meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of ECN, stated that “These organisations have been diligently working on this project.

“Our collective effort is aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and promoting climate-friendly cooling solutions, thereby contributing significantly to Nigeria’s climate goals and sustainable energy access.’’

He emphasized that scaling up energy-efficient and climate-friendly cooling is a crucial component of Nigeria’s revised nationally determined contributions.

Abdullahi urged the committee to approach its deliberations with diligence, expertise, and a collaborative spirit, as their work will not only influence national standards but also contribute to Nigeria’s global commitment to combat climate change.

Earlier, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, Director-General of SON, represented by Olalekan Omoniyi, Deputy Director of Standards Development, noted that the review is aimed at not just meeting current needs but also preparing for the future, enabling Nigeria to participate in continental and global trade.

He highlighted that setting appropriate energy standards would contribute to global efforts to combat climate change and enhance Nigeria’s reputation as a leader in sustainable energy solutions, potentially attracting more international investment and partnerships.

Committee Chairman Nelson Chukwu stated that one of the objectives of the meeting was to review and scrutinize draft standards.

He emphasized the importance of attention to ensure the standards are robust, scientifically sound, and tailored to the environmental needs and conditions.

Chukwu added that the committee aims to establish a benchmark to drive the industry towards higher efficiency while maintaining a balance between performance and cost-effectiveness.

He reminded the committee that energy efficiency is not just a technical requirement but a critical component of their deliberations.
