ECOWAS President, Dr Omar Touray said this at the grand finale of the ECOWAS Flood Response Project on Wednesday in Bauchi.
Represented by Sintiki Tarfa, Director ECOWAS Commission, Touray said the relief materials were provided in collaboration with the Bauchi State Government.
He said the commission expended N320 million on distribution of food and non food items to 1,000 flood affected households, while the state government supported 1,000 others.
The president listed the items to include rice, beans, grits, vegetable oil, palm oil, treated nets, blankets, buckets, mats and N75,000 to each of the affected households.
Touray said the ECOWAS Emergency Flood Response programme has supported 850 households since Dec. 15, 2024, in Bauchi, Katagum, Jama’are, Zaki, Gamawa, Giade, and Kirfi Local Government Areas of the state.
Gov. Bala Mohammed lauded the gesture, and urged the beneficiaries to utilise the items to support their families.
Represented by Aminu Hammayo, Secretary to the State Government, Mohammed said the government also augmented the gesture by supporting another set of 1,000 households affected by the disaster in Bauchi LGA.
Also, the President of the Red Cross Society, Prince Adeaga said the organisation provided emergency response services to communities affected by the disaster in the state.
“Flooding has led to displacement of communities, destruction of homes, and left many without access to clean water, food and shelter,
“The situation on the ground is critical with many families struggling to survive in the wake of this disaster,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Laraba Hassan, commended the gesture, adding that it would go a long way to alleviate their sufferings.
“This donation is a lifeline for us, we lost everything and the support will help us to start rebuilding our lives.”
