The Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Tunis has assured citizens of the region of the entrenchment of democratic norms and good governance in the region in-spite of the current challenges.
Dr. Tunis expressed this optimism at the closing ceremony of the First Extraordinary Session of the year 2022 of ECOWAS Parliament in Monrovia, Liberia.
The Speaker of the Community Parliament said that he is convinced that the outcome of the Extraordinary Session and the effect of the deliberations and recommendations will yield positive results in the region.
According to Tunis, ‘We will continue to intensify the quest for democratic rule which remains the bedrock for political inclusion and good governance while emphasizing that all hope is not lost and as we do say there is light at the end of this tunnel.”
He reiterated that the 5th legislature’s mantra still remains the Direct election of Members into ECOWAS Parliament.
‘This year we would continue to put in our efforts by intensifying deliberation and discussions to ensure that this august task is brought to fruition as this will be the hallmark of quality representation which will in no doubt be purposeful and accountable to the citizens of the sub-region.”
The ECOWAS Parliament Speaker on behalf of the Parliament expressed his profound gratitude to President George Weah and the good people of Liberia for accepting to host the Session.
“This act of generosity and warmness which we witnessed in the last couple of days again testifies that Liberians are naturally loving and hospitable. We see this as an act of honour and we deeply appreciate the gesture”.
Dr. Tunis also expressed his special thanks to Dr. GoodluckEbele Jonathan former President of Nigeria and current Mediator on the Crisis in Mali as well as Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Former Executive Secretary of the ECOWAS Commission and current Mediator on the Crisis in Guinea for honouring the August gathering with their presence to share their perspective on the political situation in the region.
He expressed hope that the quality of presentations and deliberation at the Session will in no small measure shape the future of the region.
‘In the last few days while undertaking our parliamentary work as provided in the supplementary Act we have extensively discussed and analyzed the political situation in the sub region vis-s-vis the incessant coup d’états in some Member States.”
“The selfless deliberations and insightful discussion as well as their conclusions are worth commendation’.
” I am convinced the effects of our deliberations and recommendations will yield positive results in our sub-region.”
The Speaker also appreciated the contributions of the resource persons, moderators and interpreters as well as staff and all participants for their invaluable contributions to the success of the Session.
