Dr. Omar El Toray, President of the Economic Community of West African States, signed grant agreements with 15 training centers to build capacities in the field of agroecology in member states.

The total budget of grant agreements supported by the EU is €1,320,784.43, or roughly €88,000 per center, over the course of 18 months, with the goal of educating 12,000 young people in the area.

This was stated in a statement that the Commission released. The purpose of each grant, according to the statement, is to establish a framework for collaboration between ECOWAS and the recipient center to carry out program activities in West Africa with the overall goal of developing human resources and an environmentally friendly system that will support and boost agricultural productivity and build a resilient rural society.

The overall goal of the program is to train about 12,000 young people, including both men and women, by 2024 in agroecology in the region.

The statement read in part, “The fifteen training centers were selected after a due process of consultation and evaluation, and represent one center per Member State. By supporting the centers through agreements, ECOWAS seeks to improve the quality of training, develop the capacities of the centers in topical issues related to agroecology and increase the annual number of people trained in the field of agroecology”.
