Editors Must Ensure Credible Elections -Imo State Governor

Editors under the auspices of All Nigeria Guild of Editors have been urged to ensure credible,free and fair election in February, 2023.

 

Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodinma made this appeal while declaring open the 18th All Nigeria Editors conference in Owerri Imo state.

 

The Governor said the role of Editors were very critical against the backdrop of current political headlines and commentaries which panders towards divisiveness, threat to National security and sectional interests few months to tye conduct of a general election early next year.

 

Imo state governor cited cases of negative and unverified reports against his state, especially in development initiatives and social cohesion of Nigerians.

 

According to him, “this is the time to uphold ethical conduct and industry sanctions against professional misconduct.”

 

Hope Uzodinma cautioned against announcement of unverified election results and proprietorial interests in the media organisations.

 

President Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mustapha Isa assured participants at the conference that members must shun divisive rhetorics and ready to challenge any attempt to trample on press freedom.

 

Interrogate Political Parties

He promised Nigerians that the media is fully ready to interrogate candidates political parties candidates and manifestos on service delivery.

 

Chairman of the conference, the first female Professor in Mass communication, Stella Chinyere okunna reminded Editors of their unique roles as gate keepers and agenda setters. These roles she stated must not be compromised in any guise.

 

Editors cannot afford to fall below the expectations of their profession . You must remember when you are , as tye oxygen of democracy, the media must find the courage to speak truth to power and resist any intimidations,” Professor Okunna advised.

 

The keynote address was delivered by Chief Inia Nwodo, former minister of information, called on the media to mobilise citizens for the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

 

The two day conference would feature presentation and discussions on role of Editors towards credible elections, induction of new members and fellows of Nigeria Guild of Editors.

 

Editors are also expected to embark on media tours of development projects in Imo state.

 

Imo state is the first state in the south east Nigeria to host Editors across the country.

 

As a center of hospitality in the South East, Imo state has hosted several professional groups including the security services and accountants.
