The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has suspended the commissioning of 102 ultra-modern buses acquired for the rebranded Edoline Mass Transit Scheme as a mark of respect and national mourning over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Fred Itua, the Governor said proceeding with the flag-off of the public transportation project at this time would be insensitive, given the national mood following the death of Nigeria’s former leader.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a towering figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey and governance history. As a people, we must reflect this period of national loss with appropriate solemnity. Therefore, we have decided to postpone the unveiling of the Edoline buses in honour of his memory,” the Governor said.
Governor Okpebholo extended condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, noting the weight of the nation’s loss.
He also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to invited guests, dignitaries, stakeholders, and members of the public who had anticipated the event, assuring them that a new date would be announced.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing reliable, people-centred public transportation and pledged that the Edoline scheme would soon begin operations to ease intra-urban mobility for Edo residents.
