The Nigeria Elections Debate Group, NEDG is partnering with the Edo Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ to host the 2024 Edo Governorship Debate.

This is contained in a statement made available by NEDG’s Executive Secretary, Mr Eddie Emessiri, in Benin, the state capital.

The debate is scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Edo NUJ Press Centre in Benin.

According to Emessiri, NEDG will partner with the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, BON to collaborate with the Edo NUJ in hosting the debate.

“This partnership aims to enhance democratic engagement and provide the electorate with comprehensive information about candidates’ policies and programmes,” he said.

Emessiri emphasised the importance of hosting the debate to deepen democratic values and good governance in Nigeria.

He noted that NEDG was already planning to host a debate but learnt that the NUJ had set up a committee for the same purpose.

“To avoid duplicating efforts, NEDG decided to collaborate with the Edo NUJ,” he said.

He stressed that the collaboration between NEDG, BON, and the state council of NUJ would bring numerous benefits to the candidates, the state and its electorate.

“The combined efforts of these organisations will ensure a well-organised and widely viewed debate, broadcast nationwide, offering unparalleled exposure for the candidates and bringing national prominence to Edo,” he said.

Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission,  INEC fixed the Edo State governorship election for September, 21, 2024.
