Education Ministry Presents Report On Teacher’s Competence in Borno

On the 20th of December, 2021 the Ministry of education in collaboration with the state Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) ,and the Better Education Service Delivery for all (BESDA) ,organised trainings and administered a literacy and numeracy questionnaire to the 17,229 Local Education Authority( LEA) teachers across the 27 local government areas in the state.
In furtherance to achieve the desired objective by the present government in sanitizing the educational system in the state, a committee was constituted which had its members drawn from the Ministry of Education, SUBEB, BESDA, Stakeholders in the academia from all the LGAs, Nigerian Labour congress, Nigerian Union of Teachers and other relevant stakeholders
Speaking during the report presentation the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, thank the governor for entrusting them with such a huge task he also thank all other stakeholders who took part in the exercise, the committee had also forwarded twenty-four (24) recommendations in the main report for kind consideration by the Borno State Governor. Before submitting the report to Governor Zulum with other members of the committee, the commissioner highlighted the governor of what contains in the report
He revealed that, the 17,229 teachers across the 27 LGAs, had 5,439 qualified teachers which constitute 31.6%, 7, 975 constituting 46.3% need further training,While 3,815 constituting 22.1% are incompetent.
The report also revealed that 2, 389 teachers representing 13.9% had been teaching without any formal qualification from any institution.
Governor Zulum who spoke after the presentation of the report said, “We cannot move Borno forward unless we are able to sanitize our public schools system and If I am able to sanitize education, I would have achieved 50% of what I set out to achieve as Governor”.
However, Governor Zulum vow not to retrench anyone rather to transfer those that a found incompetent to teach to other places that they can also function effectively.
Similarly, Governor Zulum Sworn in New commissioner and 3 permanent secretary, which he described the appointment as timely and quota base in-line with the Borno State character system.
The oath of office was presided by Justice Haruna Mshelia at the Government, those appointed were, Architect Isa Garba Halidu as commissioner for works and housing, Garba Musa permanent secretary who hails from Chibok local government
Grema Mallam Fannami permanent secretary from Jere local government and Ahmadu Umara -Mafa local government respectively
Zulum urged them to be proactive and ensure that they discharge their duties in accordance with the Nigerian constitution.
