Egypt Rescues Point From Ghana After AFCON Battle

Egypt twice came back from behind to secure a point for the Black Stars of Ghana against Egypt in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group C match, at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Ghana featured Antoine Semenyo in attack with Mohammed Kudus supporting the striker, while Jordan Ayew and Inaki Williams were on the wings. For Egypt, Mostafa Mohamed led the line while captain Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush were on the flanks.

The match lived up to the hype as both sides came our firing, creating a few chances in the search for three (3) points. Mohammed Kudu’s introduction into Ghana’s starting line-up yielded an instant result after the West Ham United attacker tried his luck from distance via Abdul Salis Samed’s assist to put Ghana 1-0 up.

However, Egypt capitalised on a defensive error from Inaki Williams, as Omar Marmoush rounded goalkeeper Richard Ofori to level matters for the Pharaohs in the 69th minute. 1-1!

However, more drama was to come as the in-form Kudus struck again in brilliant fashion.

Kudus restored Ghana’s lead after receiving a pass from Denis Odoi at the edge of the penalty box, before curling a lovely ball past Mohammed El Shenawy and into the far post, deflecting to give the goalkeeper no chance in the 71st minute. 2-1!

Egypt were determined to fight its way back into the match. The Pharaohs then secured the equaliser through Trezeguet Mostafa Mohammed, striking back two minutes after they went behind. 2-2!

Both sides could not be separated as the referee blew the final whistle and the thrilling match came to an end, at the stunning Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.

In a battle of giants, Africa delivered yet another spectacle for the fans of the beautiful game. The result means Cape Verde tops Group B with three (3) points from one game, while Egypt are in second place with two (2) points from two matches.

Mozambique are in third with one (1) point from one match and Ghana stays bottom with one (1) point from two games. Ghana will play Mozambique on Monday, January 22nd in their last group game, with Cape Verde and Mozambique set to battle it out in their second match.
