Ekiti 2023: INEC boss, Police Chief assure stakeholders of transparency, security

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has assured all stakeholders that they had put necessary arrangements in place to ensure transparency and security in the Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State.
The INEC chairman and the Police chief spoke in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, during a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the election.
No credible election can be achieved in an atmosphere of disruption, violence and disorder. It is, therefore, important for everyone to maintain the peace.

While the INEC Chairman reassured the people of the state that the decision of who would become the next governor would be that of the electorate through their votes, the Police Chief said necessary security deployment had been done so people could cast their votes without fear of molestation.
The INEC boss said, “Let me assure political parties and voters that electing a new governor will be the decision of voters.
“We won’t take any action to the advantage or disadvantage of any party or candidate. We will do everything according to the 1999 Constitution and provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.”
Yakubu stated that they had deployed four INEC national commissioners and eight Resident Electoral Commissioners to ensure a credible election.
He added that 76 percent of the 988,923 registered voters in the state had collected their Permanent Voter Cards as of Monday, saying they still had the chance to get the PVCs until Thursday.
