Electricity Distribution Company Generates N5.5b Revenue

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company, KEDCO has generated revenue of over N5.5 billion to the end of January, 2023, the highest ever, from its franchise areas of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.

The revenue was up by over 70 percent in six months compared to the 3.2 billion naira generated as at June 2022.

The Managing Director of KEDCO, Ahmad Dangana stated this at the ongoing three days management retreat of the company being held at Bristol Palace in Kano state.

He said the companies market remittance in the corresponding period also grew from 42 Percent to 58 percent, promising to take it up to more 70 percent at year end.

“Our revenue grew grom from N3.2 billion naira to over N5.5 billion naira in six months beginning from June 2022 to January, 2023. That’s over 72 percent growth in our revenue collection as at January 2023.

“Our market remittance which was at 42 percent in June 2022, I can proudly say that, it is now over 58 percent. Surely, we can do better, as our target this year is take our market remittance to over 70 percent,” he said.

The retreat, according to him, was designed to evaluate KEDCO’s activities in the proceeding year and chat sustainable ways forward for 2023, aimed at supplying more electricity to Kano, the second biggest commercial city in Nigeria and it’s environs.

Improved Power Supply

The MD explained that, the company as part of its commitment was focusing on improved  power supply for customers to get maximum satisfaction, which has led to the repairs of more than 250 transformers in a self owned Workshop, as plans are equally on to repair additional 400 transformers.

“If you observe we are giving more power supply than before.

“One of the initiatives was on the repairs of over 250 transformers in the last few months in our franchise areas, which is quite good but we can do better.

“We now have a transformer workshop of our own. Going forward, we have to repair 300 to 400 more transformers to enable more power supply,” he said.

Effective Network System

He emphasised that KEDCO has sustained investment worth of over N17 billion to build efficient and effective network system to give customers more satisfaction.

Other things that we have done includes:  modernization of our Networks, which reduces our outrages, focusing on response time to our customers, ensuring fairer billing so that whatever we bill customers is what they have consumed.

“We also make sure that staff salaries, their bonuses, health and other benefits are paid as at when due, as we undertake staff organizational restructure to get them to be more productive, reduce redundancy and improve professionalism within KEDCO,” the MD said.

Solar Energy
Dangana said the company would have to take into cognizance the future generation strategy with inovative solutions towards sustainability, especially in the area of Solar energy.

“Climate change is topical issue, that we have to put in the fore front of everything we are doing now. We have to look at the environmental foot print. Based on.this, we have to evolve creative ideas around generating energy in a more cleaner Models such as Solar and what not. So we will put focus on this,” he added.

The Chief Commercial Officer of KEDCO, Abubakar Yusuf said customer satisfaction remained the main focus of the organisation, especially in the areas of mass metering, where there was a huge gap.

He said some intiatives are being implemented to reduce the gap.

He says, “Customers need meters, so that what they consume is what they pay for. So far under the National Mass Metering program of the Federal government, we have installed over 80, 000 meters and more are coming.

“However, before the continuation, we have the Meter Asset Provider Scheme for interested customers to pay for meters and it will be installed for them. 

“Another one we are planning to implement very soon, is  the vendor financing Metering,  where meters will be installed for customers by vendors and they will gradually pay for it on installmental basis.

He added that KEDCO has also made provisions to ease customers complain, as they can now lodge complaints through Online portals,, dedicated call centers as well as emails among others, which will reduce inconveniences and within turnaround time.

KEDCO, is one of the eleven Distribution Companies privatised by the Nigerian government as part of the power sector deregulation in 2014 to ensure direct power distribution to homes across the country.
