The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has urged its customers to upgrade their prepaid meters before November 24, 2024, due to the upcoming Token Identifier rollover.

This exercise affects all Standard Transfer Specification (STS)-compliant prepaid meters.

The announcement was made by Mr Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications, in a statement.

Ezeh emphasised that meters that are not upgraded will no longer accept new tokens, although they will remain functional until the energy credits already loaded are depleted.

The statement read, “EEDC has previously informed customers through various engagements and enlightenment programs that all STS prepaid meters will cease to accept credit tokens after November 24, 2024, unless they are upgraded.”

It further noted that meters not upgraded would still operate until the existing credits are exhausted. The transition to the new vending system, ‘SuperEdge,’ was successfully completed by EEDC on February 24, 2024, as part of its upgrade preparations.

“Customers who have not recharged their prepaid meters since February 2024 will receive Key Change Tokens with their first recharge. These consist of three sets of 20-digit tokens that must be entered sequentially into the meter. The upgrade process is free of charge for customers.”

EEDC also advised customers with previously purchased tokens yet to be loaded onto their meters to do so before entering the three sets of 20-digit tokens. Once the meter is upgraded, those tokens will no longer be accepted, and no refunds will be issued for unused tokens.
