The Nasarawa State Police Command has adopted new measures to tackle rising insecurity during the ember months, a period often associated with increased criminal activity.
Commissioner of Police Umar Shehu-Nadada revealed the new strategies during an interview with journalists in Lafia, the state capital.
He noted that the ember months of September through December tend to experience a surge in various criminal activities, necessitating the need for proactive and targeted security efforts.
Shehu-Nadada attributed the relative peace in the state to effective collaboration between security agencies and residents in the area of information sharing.
He commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his unwavering support to the security sector, including the recent provision of operational vehicles to enhance mobility and operational efficiency.
“The support of Governor Sule has significantly bolstered our efforts. The operational vehicles he distributed have greatly improved our capacity to respond to security challenges,” he said.
The commissioner highlighted several vulnerable areas in Lafia, including Shabu, Gandu, Angwan Mai Matasa, and the Shingle/Five Hundred Housing Estate, where criminal activities are most prevalent.
He assured residents that security presence in these areas would be intensified.
“In Shabu, for instance, our efforts have yielded significant results, with several arrests leading to a drastic reduction in crime,” Shehu-Nadada stated.
Regarding recent clashes between farmers and herders in Dogon Dutse, a community located between Nasarawa and Toto Local Government Areas, the commissioner said that additional security operatives had been deployed to restore peace.
“On November 18, 2024, at about 4:30 PM, we received a report of a clash between herders and farmers. Tragically, two individuals were killed on the farm, while four others sustained injuries and were taken to a local primary health care center. During a subsequent search, a third body was recovered, bringing the total fatalities to three,” he explained.
He added that mobile police units have been stationed in the area to maintain patrols and prevent further violence.
CP Shehu-Nadada called on residents of Nasarawa State to cooperate with security agencies to sustain peace and ensure the safety of lives and property.
“Security is a collective responsibility, and with your support, we can make Nasarawa a haven for all,” he concluded.
