Emmy Awards 2021: Michaela Coel Makes History
British actress of Ghanaian heritage Michaela Coel made history as the first black woman to win an Emmy for best writing in a limited series on Sunday, the 19th of September 2021.
Her hit series which she starred in, wrote and co-directed ‘I May Destroy You’ follows main character Arabella, as she deals with the trauma of a sexual assault.
According to BBC reports, Michaela Coel encouraged other creators to “write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable. I dare you”, in her acceptance speech.
Ghanaians have also reacted to her win with various comments on twitter,
A tweet ran “Michaela Coel is ever so honest with her work. Way over due, so well deserved.”
“Wow… this is a win for Ghana too… Congratulations @MichaelaCoel … Ghana is proud of you.” another tweeted.
Her win was also celebrated in the diaspora, with one person in California tweeting,“Ghana STAND UP! Michaela Coel, That’s how you do it! Well deserved, so so proud #Emmys”.
Earlier this year, the actress was reportedly drafted among the star actors on the ‘Black Panther’ movie sequel currently in production.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards was hosted by Cedric the entertainer.
