The newly appointed Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, on Wednesday, sealed the X-ray unit of Poly General Hospital in Asata, located in the heart of the state capital.
The closure occurred during an unannounced inspection by Ugwu and a team of Ministry of Health officials, who identified unsafe practices and regulatory breaches in the hospital’s X-ray section.
“This inspection revealed several violations, including the absence of proper radiation shielding and failure to maintain essential safety protocols,” Ugwu stated.

He explained that the action was taken to protect patients, staff, and the community from potential hazards associated with improper handling and operation of radiology equipment.
Emphasising that the safety of citizens is non-negotiable, he warned that any health facility failing to meet required safety and operational standards would face immediate sanctions.
“This action will serve as a warning, as Gov. Peter Mbah will not compromise on the quality of healthcare delivery,” he added.
Ugwu assured the public that the X-ray unit would remain sealed until all violations are rectified and a follow-up inspection by the Ministry of Health confirms compliance with safety standards.
