The Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr Patrick Ubru, has pledged renewed commitment to collaborative partnerships to accelerate agricultural potential and value chain developmeent in the state.

Ubru made this known on Wednesday in Enugu while receiving a delegation from the South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO), a non-governmental organisation led by its Executive Director, Dr Stanley Ilechukwu.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to working with agriculture-focused NGOs and organisations to boost agricultural development and promote increased food production for both local consumption and export.

“Agriculture is the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. In Enugu State, many families, both in urban and rural areas, depend on various forms of agricultural activity for their daily livelihoods,” he said.

“Our agriculture-friendly governor, Dr Peter Mbah, is currently supporting genuine farmers, those who are duly registered and verified by the Ministry with inputs, updated knowledge, and techniques to enhance agriculture and transform it into a thriving business.”

In his remarks, Ilechukwu expressed SSDO’s interest in partnering with the ministry to deliver sustainable agricultural solutions, particularly to farmers in rural communities across the state.

He pledged the organisation’s support for the state government’s ongoing farmer empowerment initiatives, which are designed to improve agricultural practices, ensure bountiful harvests, and strengthen food security for residents of the state and the nation at large.

“As climate change continues to pose a threat to food production, SSDO remains committed to advancing impactful initiatives alongside the Enugu state government. Together, we can secure a resilient future for agriculture in the region,” he stated.

Ilechukwu explained that the proposed sustainable agriculture initiatives would focus on agroecology, climate resilience, and policy reforms, key strategies for achieving long-term food security.

He noted that the partnership would represent a major step towards building a sustainable agricultural system that benefits farmers, local communities, and the entire state.
