Enugu State Prepares For Maiden Security Swimming Championship

The Enugu State Government in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Enugu State Command is set for the first Security Swimming Championship, scheduled to hold in Enugu State on June 27th, 2024.

The Chairman of Enugu Swimming Association, Hon. (Dr) Mathias Madu, who disclosed this while interacting with newsmen in Enugu said the security swimming championship is open to police personnel, their relatives and other securities agencies in the state.

According to Madu, the championship which would be held at DeAngelo Hotel swimming pool in GRA, Enugu, will be free without any form of registration for the championship. He said that prizes which he did not disclose would be given during the championship.

“The registration for the championship is free for security men and their relatives and or dependants who may wish to participate,” Madu said. “We made it strictly for the security personnel and their relations.”

According to him, about 50 to 150 participants are expected at the upcoming championship. Madu said that the championship became necessary because it is good that security personnel keep fit, which in the long run would culminate in their optimum performance.

He commended the Enugu State governor, Dr Peter Mbah for providing the enabling environment as well as investing in sporting activities in the state. Madu said the efforts of the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Barrister Iloyd Ekweremadu has also been wonderful.

Also speaking, the Enugu State Director of Sports, Ephraim Ochoma, said the Ministry of Sports Development will do everything within it’s powers to ensure that the swimming championship is a success.

“We want to revive the swimming sector of our sports industry to be able to compete with other states in the federation of Nigeria,” Ochoma said. “We need to diversify as swimming has many medals. We want to be able to raise a swimming team for Enugu State.”

He lauded the Swimming Association for coming up with the tournament.

The Chief Host would be Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State while the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu also plays as co-host.
