The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has called on environmental consultants to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in their work.

Their role is to identify, assess and mitigate environmental impacts and ensure compliance with environmental laws and standards.

The Director General of NESREA, Dr Innocent Barikor made the call at a training workshop organised for newly environmental consultants, on Monday in Abuja.

The programme was designed to update consultants on the latest regulations as well as giving insight into the current environmental challenges in the country.

Barikor said that the environmentalists were inducted to work towards mitigation of environmental impact, safeguard natural resources and elevate and improve environmental practices across the environment sector.

He said that the consultants were “pools” of specialists, whose activities have intellectual contents, adding that the agency would work with the professionals to address specific environmental challenges in the sector.

Barikor said that the mission of the agency to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for Nigerians could not be accomplished without the dedication and expertise of the consultants.

“Your role is pivotal in the identification, assessment, and mitigation of environmental impacts, and in ensuring compliance with environmental laws and standards,” he said.

“I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities for continuous learning and professional development that come with this accreditation,” he said.

Speaking, the European Union (EU) delegate to the event, Mr Godffrey Ogbemudia, who spoke virtually, thanked NESREA for the collaborative relationship over time.

He said that the EU would continue to play a role in offering technical assistance to the regulatory body to improve national growth and development.

NESREA was established by law in 2007, with the responsibility of ensuring compliance with set standards, and disciplining violators with a view to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment for Nigerians.
