Enyimba Crashes Out Of CAF Confederation Cup
Nigerian side Enyimba FC crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup following a 3-1 defeat to Zamalek SC, at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt on Sunday night.
Enyimba played out a 2-2 draw against defending champions Zamalek in their last Group D meeting and were seeking victory for a chance to progress.
Zamalek midfielder Mustafa Shalaby gave the hosts the lead in the 29th minute to mount pressure on visitors Enyimba.
Forward Seifeddine Jaziri added the second three minutes into the second half to stun the Nigerians, before Enyimba striker Ifeanyi Ihemekwele reduced the deficit for the visitors in the 57th minute.
However, Jaziri then scored his second of the game three minutes from time to send Enyimba crashing out of the tournament.
Enyimba finished Group D in third position with five (5) points from six games to end a disappointing campaign.
For Zamalek, the Egyptians advanced to the quarter-finals as the champions seek to successfully defend its CAF Confederation Cup title.
The elimination marks the end of Enyimba’s continental campaign, with the Nigerian side now forced to reflect on what could have been as they turn their attention to domestic matters.
In the group’s other fixture, Al Masry claimed a 3-1 win over Black Bulls of Mozambique to finish second.
