Enyimba Falls To ES Setif In CAF Confederation Cup

Enyimba of Nigeria suffered a 3-0 away defeat to Algeria’s ES Setif in its CAF Confederation Cup Group A encounter on Sunday at the Stade 8 Mai 1945 in Setif, Algeria.

Goals from Amir Karaoui, Mohamed Amoura and Akram Djahnit were all the Algerians needed to record it’s first win in the group phase after failed attempts in their last three matches.

The People’s Elephant entered the match confident after its impressive 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture a week ago.

Tosin Omoyele and Anayo Iwuala maintain their partnership upfront, while Kadiri Samad was replaced by Cyril Olisema.  Austin Oladapo, Dare Olátúnjí and Anthony Omaka all started in midfield.

Amir Karaoui opened the scoring for Setif in the 31st minute, before Amine El-Amine Amoura made it 2-0  just before the halftime whistle. Enyimba came out stronger in the second half, however, they could not find a way past a well-organised Setif defence.

Ahkram Dhajnit secured the third goal from the penalty spot in the 65th minute, as the Algerian club dominated the encounter throughout the match.

With ten minutes left to play, referee Amin Omar awarded a penalty to Setif following a foul from Emmanuel Ampiah in the box. Enyimba goalkeeper John Noble saved Djahnit’s penalty attempt and managed to keep out the rebound.

It was the  People’s Elephants second defeat of the campaign  as the match finished 3-0 to the visitors.

Despite their loss, Enyimba stay second in Group A with 6 points from 4 games, while ES Setif sit at the bottom of the table with 4 points from 4 games..

Enyimba are two points behind leaders Orlando Pirates of South Africa, who beat Al Ahly Benghazi 3-0 at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side would be looking to return to winning ways when they visit the Benina Martyrs Stadium for its next fixture against Libya’s Al Ahly Benghazi on the 21st of April.
