EPO Inspects Kano Irrigation Project

The Permanent Secretary of Ecological Project Office (EPO), Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, has reiterated the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to ensure that no part of the country is neglected.
Dr. Aishetu stated this during stakeholders’ engagement on Kano irrigation projects, which comprised Tiga Dam, Challawa Dam, and Kafin Chiri Dam in Kano state.
While emphasizing on the Mr President Renew Hope Agenda to ameliorate the suffering of the people of Kano state and improve the social economic development within the catchment area and the general population of Nigeria, she noted that the intervention project will be divided into three areas which include, infrastructure rehabilitation around the three dams.
She said others are ecological intervention such as roads and bridges and the utilization of the dams.
She said “the project rehabilitation expectation to include ensuring optimal water storage capacity of the dams, increase crop yield, generate employment and stimulate local economies; and extended dam life span and reduce risks of dam failure to ensure community safety.”
During his briefing, the Director Irrigation Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Mr Abdulsalam Yakasau,  represented by the Acting Managing Director, Mr Bello Sani Gwarzo, stated that the intervention of the Tiga, Challawa and Kafin Chiri Dams is very apt considering the benefits.
He assured that their organisation have necessary facilities that will be able to assist in ensuring the success of the project.
The Head of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Kano state station, Dr Alpha Kamara, represented by Rabo Ado, Administrative Manager, pledged to provide quality seed of adaptable varieties, engage in community engagement, involve in capacity building of the value chain agent.
“We will provide leadership in land and water management, provide soil fertility and soil health management, irrigation management, provide market linkage, provide improvement of the water shield system, building partnership, provide sustainable way in which the farmers work together with input dealers and extension services.” he said.
During the guided sites tour of the Tiga, Challawa and Kafin Chiri Dams, Ecological Project Office engaged with the communities in order to identify their challenges and expectations in order to provide sustainable solutions.
