Former Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has urged Nigerian youth to work hard and resist the temptation of seeking quick wealth, warning that such pursuits often lead to regret and irreversible consequences.
Delivering the 40th Convocation Lecture of the University of Ilorin, titled “The Gen-Z Playbook: Navigating Work and the Real World”, Fashola said hard work, discipline, and integrity remain the true path to success.
He cautioned that the obsession with instant riches could result in misery and moral compromise, noting that “true success takes time and consistency.”
The former Lagos State Governor advised the graduands to reject negative influences, uphold good values, and support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which, he said, “aims to create opportunities for young Nigerians.”
Fashola also encouraged the youth to build positive relationships, engage meaningfully with others rather than depend solely on technology, and use social media responsibly to project Nigeria’s image positively.
In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, University of Ilorin, Mr. Abiodun Aluko, urged the graduands to be of good conduct and contribute to national development.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole charged the graduands to become agents of transformation, noting that the university has produced 13,868 graduates this year, including 316 First Class holders.
He said that “the institution continues to rank among the best in Nigeria, attracting about ₦2.5 billion in TETFund grants in 2025.”
He also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu, as Visitor to the University, will commission seven new projects during the convocation ceremonies.
