Expert appeals to Govt to prioritise healthcare providers’ welfare
A medical practitioner, Dr Ilori Solomon, has appealed to the Federal Government to prioritise the welfare of healthcare providers in order to strengthen the country’s health sector.
Solomon, the immediate past Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Osun, made this plea during an interview on Monday.
He stressed that improving doctors’ welfare was crucial for retaining talented professionals and alleviating the growing strain on Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“Between January 1 and now, I personally know of up to 10 doctors who have left the country,” he said.
He noted that many doctors, representing Nigeria’s best, were seeking better opportunities abroad.
Solomon also highlighted the significant shortage of doctors in many hospitals, with those remaining being overworked.
He expressed concern that many young doctors were now hesitant to practice in Nigeria, as they found little inspiration in the lives of senior doctors facing challenging conditions.
Addressing the safety concerns of healthcare providers, Solomon pointed to disturbing incidents such as overworked doctors, attacks by aggrieved relatives, and even the kidnapping of a female doctor.
He urged the government to improve working conditions and ensure the safety of healthcare professionals in order to prevent further brain drain.
He called on the government to increase funding for the health sector, improve healthcare facilities, and prioritise the security and welfare of doctors, adding, “Health is wealth.
“The government’s priority should be making healthcare accessible and safe for all,” he said.
He also reiterated the need for the government to fulfil its commitment to allocate 15 per cent of the annual budget to the health sector, as previously agreed with the NMA.
